Kabul Speaks Out

  • Mar. 13th, 2009 at 8:31 AM

In yesterday's Washington Post Afghanistan's ambassador to the US, Said T. Jawad lashed out at the international community and especially the US for numerous missteps in policies toward his country.  Ambassador Jawad said the policies of forcing Kabul to explore talks with the Taliban prematurely had placed them in a position of negotiating from weakness rather than of strength.  Additionally, he was highly critical (and has a right to be) of the US plan to arm tribal leaders in a community guard program which will imitate that of the Sunni Awakening program in Iraq which was employed to counter the growing power of insurgents. A plan which could never work in Afghanistan since the tribal structures are a wholesale difference than they are in Iraq.  Finally Jawad was suspicious of the US efforts in re-igniting a judicial process which has proceeded down a western path void of any recognizable elements to the people that it is suppose to serve.  It is truly difficult to argue with Ambassador Jawad;s with these issues since we have treated Afghanistan as a client rather than a partner, we have seen it as a liability rather than an allie and now we are tired of it and simply would rather walk away than attempt to do it right.  No wonder they hate us, no wonder we find ourselves in an untenable situation today wondering if 17,000 more troops will be that push needed to propel Afghanistan into a still undefined state of development so we can finally feel good about it and get out....we all the that a certain road is paved with good intentions.  Why is it we not only go down that road but have the desire to widen it?
